Surface modifying lubrication technology has been around for many
years, however has remained predominantly in the realms of industry, only feasible in a limited number of specialised applications, until now. SM lubricants are named so due to the fact that they can withstand extreme pressures, meaning that any pressure exerted on a protected surface results in compression, rather than the scarring and heat generated when traditional oils have been squeezed out, allowing metal on metal contact.

The primary role of a lubricant is to stop metal on metal contact. An oils ability to do this is measured in terms of film strength. Mineral oils have a film strength in the region of 4,000 p.s.i., when a pressure greater than this is exerted the job of the oil is essentially that of damage limitation, displacing the heat generated through its bulk, while also re-distributing the wear metals that have been generated so that further damage to that area is avoided.
With the advent of Synthetic oils, a film strength in the region of 6,000 p.s.i. was now achievable, couple this with an increase in temperature tolerance of approximately 100°C, and Synthetics secured their position as market leaders within the automotive lubricants market.
Technology has now moved on, with a film strength in excess of 220,000 p.s.i. and a temperature tolerance 100°C greater than synthetics, Prolong's Surface Modifying Motor Oil withstands pressures 50 times greater than Synthetics, in higher temperatures, all the while remaining mineral based, avoiding the lesser known draw backs that synthetics suffer from, such as their lack of ability to deal with contaminants. |

In addition to the benefits described above, another facet to Prolong's technology is that of Ionic Bonding. Prolong's oil actually bonds electrostatically to any surface it is applied to, much the same as you would get a bumper chrome plated, a similar process occurs leaving a layer of lubricant bonded to your engine. This completely eliminates dry starts, while also cleansing your system due to the fact that it also coats any wear metals in your system, releasing them from wherever they had managed to attach themselves. On top of this once Prolong's technology is in your system, due to the fact that it also displaces water, it will protect against corrosion, no matter how long your vehicle is left standing, as it will never drain down.
The combination of above features allows Prolong to market as "The World's Most Powerful Oil", this was as a result of an 18 month investigation into Prolong's claims by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) in the US, during which time other, perceived competitors, were also taken to task in an effort to clamp down on false marketing, which resulted in many be given significant fines.
